Kudos to California Senators Who Upheld Current Law
Davis, CA...Senate Bill 233 (SB233), introduced by Senator
Dennis Hollingsworth, would have amended a penal code in California
to allow the sale of kangaroo, crocodile, and alligator skins.
The bill was heard on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 before the Senate
Natural Resources and Wildlife Committee and failed to receive
enough votes to leave committee.
Although the bill has been defeated this time around, Senator
Hollingsworth has since been granted reconsideration for the
bill to be heard again. However, wildlife and animal protection
groups will continue their fight.
Last summer, Viva! launched an international campaign against
the use of kangaroo skins by giant sports company Adidas.
On May 7 of this year, Viva!USA filed a lawsuit against Adidas
and three retailers for violating California Law.
California, often a leader in progressive legislation, has
had this law protecting kangaroos, crocodiles and alligators
in effect since the 1970's. "California should be proud
to have such a proactive law to protect wildlife. We thank
those Senators who refused to listen to those who seek to
profit from a change in the law," said lauren Ornelas,
US Campaigns Director Viva!USA.
"The Australian government allows the bludgeoning of
baby kangaroos after they have been torn from their mother's
pouches -- just to make shoes," said Ornelas. Over one
hundred letters from Californians were sent to the Committee
to voice opposition to the bill.
